​The First Wedding Ceremony for the Visually Impaired Persons

The Hong Kong Society for the Blind (HKSB), Sharon Au Wedding Consultants and Hong Kong Adventist College co-organized the first wedding ceremony for 14 pairs of visually impaired couple on 13 October 2019. The brides worn wedding gown with their suit-up bridegrooms “say yes” again in front of around 400 participants included their family members, friends and reverend.

The event took place in the King Huy Hall and 1939 Lawn in Hong Kong Adventist College. The Christian style Wedding Ceremony was held in the beautiful church, 14 pairs of couples made the vows of love to their partners and kissed each other, it was a touching moment. The couples enjoyed a cocktail party with their family members and friends on the Lawn while the Cake-cutting Ceremony is held in there, too. Ms Amy Wu and Ms Susan Shaw, who are famous artists sang songs as a blessing to the couples. Last but not least, 199 balloons were sent aloft, to end the event perfectly.

The oldest participant is 90 years old, when the longest marriage reached 60 years, who are going to celebrate their “Diamond Wedding”. Some of the couples are combination of sighted and visually impaired. All of them did not have a formal wedding ceremony when they married even they are having lots of children and grandchildren already, this Wedding Ceremony means a lot to them. 

 

Mr Jim and his wife are visually impaired persons, they are married for 47 years, the Jim’s couple were working in the chalk production section of the Factory for the Blind under HKSB when they first met, after getting along day by day, they became a couple and built up a family together. Although they will have argument sometimes, they loved and supported each other and raised up their children together.

Mrs Lam is a total blind person with hearing impairment, she met her husband when she was attending a Christmas ball in her secondary school. Mr Lam fell in love with Mrs Lam in his first sight to her. Music and dancing are their common interest since their met. Mrs Lam experienced a surgical failure fifteen years ago, she lost her vision and it was a hard time to her and her family. Accompanied by Mr Lam, she came to Rehabilitation Centre of HKSB to learn different living skills, it was the turning point of her life. She is blessed that Mr Lam gave her a perfectly family, living for a half century, the Lam’s couple wish their children would witness their “Gold Wedding” soon.
